Mary Agnes Campbell was born in Sparks, Nevada on January 17, 1897. Her father, Charles Campbell, was born in Scotland, and her mother, Annie Davis, was born in Nevada. The couple were married in Pueblo, Colorado, and soon moved to San Francisco. They were killed in San Francisco in a horse and buggy accident around 1901. Mary Agnes Campbell and her sister were orphaned, and lived with family until they were placed in a Catholic boarding school at Mission San Jose, California on December 1, 1901.

As time went on, Mary moved to the Albertinium Catholic Boarding School in Ukiah, CA. When she was 18 years old the nuns of the Albertinium came to her to tell her that they had arranged a marrage for her to Joseph Niderost. She was forced to court and eventually marry Joseph Niderost. Mary, aged 19, and Joseph, aged 24, were married at St. Mary's of the Angels church in Ukiah on December 2, 1917.
